HOW TO FIND US

BOOTHFERRY ROAD COMMUNITY PROJECT

We wanted 'The Courtyard' to be more than ‘bricks and mortar’, we wanted the Centre to:

be friendly and accessible

contain space that can be used flexibly and imaginatively

be a meeting place for those who feel isolated

be a point of contact for people in need

provide offices for voluntary groups

The Courtyard's innovative combination of outstanding facilities which are available to everyone at reasonable cost - with the presence of resident voluntary groups - means the project has a vital role in supporting and developing local community and voluntary action in Goole.

We needed to raise £1m to convert the building and in 1998 after 5 years  of fundraising and hard work, the building was completed and opened its doors to the public.

What we have now is a bright, light, airy building admired by all who visit.  To date approximately 2 million people have used the facilities and it has become the favoured venue in Goole for consultations, training, conferences, business meetings, exhibitions, dancing and events from children's parties to civil weddings.

INSIDE THE COURTYARD

This well thought out renovation of a late Victorian building gives Goole an attractive venue with office accommodation for voluntary organisations and rooms for hire suitable for every occasion.

The furnishings and equipment are of a high standard and a range of charges ensures that these facilities are affordable to all users.

The public facilities include two large halls with differing characteristics, a fully equipped seminar room for formal meetings, a multi-use meeting room and a comfortable lounge.

These rooms surround a paved courtyard, with integral  seating and a water feature, which provides a calming refuge.

FUNDERS

Approximately £1m was raised to convert the building from the following sources:

 The Millennium Commission

 The Single Regeneration Budget

 The former Boothferry Borough Council

 English Partnerships

 Charitable Trusts

Today, we receive no grants from local authorities and rely on income generated from room hire and office rents to meet our running costs of £100,000 per annum.

To further develop activities here, as well as supporting our ever growing band of volunteers, we are very grateful this year to have received support from the following funders:

The Community Fund

 The Local Network Children’s Fund

 The Co-operative Group

THE VOLUNTEERS

With the growing hive of activity taking place here at The Courtyard we continue to heavily rely on the generous hands on help of a dedicated team of volunteers.

This friendly group of wonderful individuals offer us help in a variety of different ways and with varying levels of commitment.

For our younger volunteers (16-24 yr olds) they have the opportunity to gain extra attractive benefits by signing up to be Millennium Volunteers through our scheme.  By doing this, they are able to receive invitations to national volunteer events such as trips to Alton Towers and a £10 Virgin gift voucher once they have completed 100 or 200 volunteering hours through the scheme!!

Some volunteer almost 5 days a week, some offer just a couple of hours as and when they can, some help with DIY and building maintenance whilst others help out with reception/administration or serving refreshments to visiting groups.

Whatever the level of commitment, all our volunteers are very much appreciated and immensely valuable to the day-to-day running of our centre!

We couldn’t do it without them!

In return for all their hard work and by way of trying to say ‘thank you’ we invite all our volunteers to attend our special events such as our ‘60’s and 70’s Party Night’ (June 2003) and run regular volunteer outings such as our ‘Yultide Outing’ to York’s St. Nicholas Fayre.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for The Courtyard there are a whole host of different ways you can get involved.   If you would like to find out more please feel free to either call in for a friendly, no obligation chat or  telephone 01405 837100 and ask to speak to Louise.

Alternatively, you can e-mail: centre@courtyardgoole.demon.co.uk
