THE GREEN TEAM - www.freespace.virgin.net/the.greenteam

The Green Team is a voluntary organisation which began in August 1998 as a joint initiative between Boothferry CVS and Goole Town Council and became a registered charity in April 2000.  We aim to provide a free and low cost practical gardening service for elderly people and people with a disability in Goole and surrounding area with training volunteers.

We take on tasks including mowing lawns, cutting hedges, strimming, weeding, pruning and planting up.  Each client is visited before any work is carried out to assess their garden and what they would like us to do.

We welcome volunteers from all sections of the community. No special skills are required, just an interest in gardening and a willingness to work alongside other volunteers as part of a team.

We provide training for our volunteers in areas including basic health and safety, basic first aid, machinery maintenance and various horticultural techniques

For more information please contact Elaine Pittaway, Project Co-ordinator on 01405 837126.

READING ASSISTANCE TEACHING SCHEME

The R.A.T.S. scheme is a voluntary organisation formed in 1996 to link local volunteers with children aged 7 to 11 years old, who teachers have identified, would benefit from one-to-one assistance to develop their reading skills.

The Scheme develops Partnerships between volunteers and schools and encourages good reading skills through the enjoyment in their own abilities.

R.A.T.S scheme has the following basic rules:

RATS helps each child on a one-to-one basis

RATS goes into schools twice a week

RATS works with the same children for 10 weeks

RATS helps children between 7 and 11 years old

RATS never work in the classroom

RATS never take children of school premises

The friendly relationship established in regular sessions helps each child's self-esteem and allows them to experience success.  Books gradually cease to be daunting and become a source of pleasure and interest.

Volunteering - Helping children can be very satisfying and rewarding experience. If you would like more information please contact the office on tel: (01405) 837127
